Shamanic Journey Series – 2: The Three Worlds
The Three Worlds
My teachers introduced me to three worlds that we can visit when we journey: the Upper World, Lower World, and Middle World. It’s important to understand that the Upper and Lower Worlds are not related to religious concepts like Heaven, Hell or the Underworld. In the context of the shamanic journey, these are spiritual dimensions, each vast and containing many levels or layers where we can meet with our helping spirits. Sometimes, in a journey, your helping spirits will even take you from one world to another.

The Upper World is accessed by traveling upward, beyond the sky, outside of Earth, past the stars, and through the cosmic veil, a thin, membrane-like barrier. This is a high-vibrational realm inhabited by wise teachers and compassionate helping spirits of all kinds. Every spirit you encounter here is fully ascended and here to help.
The Lower World is accessed by traveling downward into the Earth, often through an opening like a hollow tree stump, cave, body of water, or hole in the ground, through a long tunnel. This realm is deeply connected to nature and the wisdom of the Earth. Helping spirits in this world often appear as power animals, but they can take any form. Like the Upper World, every spirit you encounter here is fully ascended and here to help.
The Middle World is accessed by traveling outward into the spiritual dimension that mirrors our physical world. This is the energetic layer behind our ordinary reality. Unlike the other two worlds, the Middle World contains both fully ascended helping spirits and other spirits that are not fully evolved. Much like our day-to-day lives in ordinary reality, we can encounter all kinds of energies here.
Because of this, it’s wise to be cautious when journeying in the Middle World. Always make sure you’re accompanied by one of your trusted helping spirits, a guide you’ve met in either the Upper or Lower World. If you’re new to journeying, I highly recommend focusing on the Upper and Lower Worlds first, where you can safely build relationships with your helping spirits and learn from them before exploring the Middle World.
